Centaurus Mall Fire Incident: CDA to Carry Out a Fire Audit of High Rise Buildings

Centaurus Mall Fire

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) decided to conduct a post-fire structure stability report on all the multi-story buildings where the Centaurus Mall fire broke out on Sunday at the meeting presided over by Captain (r) Muhammad Usman Younis, Chairman of the CDA.

Following the discussion, it was decided to perform a fire audit on all buildings more significant than 50 feet. High-rise buildings will also be subjected to a live-action mock exercise. The panel also mentioned the need to improve emergency services response and modernize the emergency disaster cell’s equipment.

The CDA Chairman stated that certificates would be given to staff members of Rescue 1122 in Rawalpindi for their active participation in rescue and firefighting operations, which is pertinent to mention.

On Sunday, the rescue and emergency services put out a sizable fire that had started at the 36-story Centaurus Mall. But nobody was hurt, the fire was completely put out, and the building was unharmed.

According to CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Capt (r) Mohammad Usman Younis, the fire department, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, and Rescue 1122 all contributed to the suppression of the fire. A helicopter crew was also dispatched to assist in the rescue operations and stop the fire from spreading to the building’s upper stories. On the fourth floor of the shopping center, a sizable fire started in the food court.

Although the fire was put out after two hours, the cooling process took longer, the CDA administration acknowledged. However, Islamabad Police reported that rescue teams were able to free those trapped inside the mall using a back entrance before beginning a search.

The Mall and its associated residential towers were cautiously sealed before the technical team’s report on the towers’ structural viability following the fire incident.
